The impact of chronic stress & trauma can show up in our lives in many ways.
Traumatic events, situations or relationships can shape our views about ourselves, our relationships with others, and with the world. For instance, you may experience patterns of worry, overthinking, or overwhelming emotions, even when things seem “fine”. Maybe you regularily feel nervous and on-guard, with tightness in your body, pounding heart and shallow breathing. Or you might repeatedly feel numb or empty, cut off from your own emotions, or from the support of others. Maybe you repeat habits and get stuck on auto-pilot, despite your best efforts to change the patterns. These patterns of thought, emotions and behaviors often form out of our awareness, so we can adjust, function, and survive during distressing situations. They helped us cope with relationships or situations that couldn’t meet our needs, or were hurtful. Talk therapy that taps into the strengths of our mind, body and nervous system can help us stretch beyond our limiting habits, so we can shift into new ways to respond to our distress.

How I Help
Individual psychotherapy with adults that aspires to be relational, and strengths-based while using compassion & encouragement to motivate change.
I consider how our connections in relationships, society, and our natural environment, impact our well-being.
My worldview considers how systems of oppression and inequities (based on race, sociocultural factors, socioeconomic status, and political influence) impact mental health and well-being.

Other Models that Inform How I Work
I often use theories and models of therapy that are rooted in how we develop, interact with, and adapt to the systems we are a part of. This can include our relationship with our own internal system. Therapy models that inform my work include Attachment theory, Polyvagal theory, IFS (internal family systems), cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approaches. Whatever the modality or tool, I believe that a therapeutic relationship that builds hope, trust, and understanding, along with a nudge forward, is important.
-
Mindfulness Principles and Practices
Mindfulness helps us observe our present moment-to-moment experience, and can increase our awareness of ourselves in a non-judgmental and accepting way. My work with clients is influenced by my own practice of trauma-informed mindfulness and mindful self-compassion.
